Behaviour, Sanctions and Detentions
As an academy we should all (students, staff & parents) accept that poor behaviour is not to be tolerated. We must work together in a supportive way to promote an atmosphere where our students learn, develop and thrive in a positive and happy environment. It is the responsibility of the student to behave appropriately but to attend any sanctions/detentions given.

Expectations
- Staff are expected to plan lessons which are accessible to all students with a variety of activities, catering for all learning styles. At the same time they should stretch all students and include regular assessment and target setting. Staff are also expected to maintain firm but fair discipline in the academy.
- Students are expected to behave in a way which allows teachers to teach and learners to learn. Ideally they should never cross the boundaries of unacceptable behaviour as outlined in the ‘Behaviour Policy’. Where these boundaries are crossed students are expected to accept the first line of sanction.
- Parents/carers should support their child and the academy in modelling and promoting good attitudes to learning and accepting sanctions where appropriate.
Stages of Sanctions
The diagram below shows the 7 Stages (S1 to S7) of our sanctions policy. Not all types of unacceptable behaviour are listed on it (for further detail see the Academy Behaviour Policy).
Click below for a detailed diagram of the Sanctions Triangle.
S1 and S2
- Given as warnings that continued unacceptable behaviour will lead to a sanction.
S3
- A teacher sanction of up to 30 minutes usually during break or lunch time.
- This is written in the student’s planner and recorded in our computer system.
S4
- An Academy detention for 1 hour after school (any night from Monday to Thursday).
- The only notice is given by the teacher writing in the student planner at least 24 hours in advance of the detention.
- Students are expected to show their planner to their parents/carers, parents/carers are expected to check planners.
- There is a daily detention list posted in the foyer.
- Failure to attend without good reason (absence or a note from parent/carer) will result in an escalation to S5.
S5
- An SLT detention for 90 minutes held on Fridays.
- Notification is written in the student planner at least 24 hours in advance.
- Failure to attend will result in an escalation to an S6 sanction.
- Failure may also result in a parent/carer being asked to come into meet with senior manager.
S6
- Isolation or Fixed term exclusion dependent on issue/incident.
- Isolation days will normally include an extra 1.5 hours at the end of school until 5.00pm.
S7
- Permanent Exclusion resulting from an accumulation of Fixed Term Exclusions or a single Serious incident.
NB. Fixed term and Permanent Exclusions are at the direction of the Principal only.
